Train Derailment Update

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, there was a train derailment between Martinsville & Haggerty roads, South of Huron River Driver, which included about 30 rail cars.

One railcar contained liquid chlorine, but it was upright and not leaking and was far from the overturned section. There was no evidence of exposed hazardous materials. There are no reported injuries. The road has been re-opened.

We appreciate the immediate response from Congresswoman Dingell activating FEMA and the EPA Response Team, Governor Whitmer’s office activating EGLE’s Incident Management Team and County Executive Evans’ activating County Homeland Security in coordination with Van Buren Public Safety and local officials.

After the recent incident in Ohio, Van Buren is going to know we are safe before we disengage from this event.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Updates will be made to the public as they become available.
