Welcome to Van Buren Township, a premier community!
Van Buren offers a distinctive mix of rural character and suburban amenities. The Township has a strong agricultural heritage that is still evident today in several large farms and historic homesteads. The community also encompasses incomparable natural features including over eight miles of the Huron River. In the 1920’s Detroit Edison constructed the French Landing Dam to generate hydroelectric power and created Belleville Lake. This 1,200 acre, all-sports Lake now forms the centerpiece of the community and provides a desirable residential location. Significant areas of remaining woodlots create scenic vistas and tree lined roads that support a country living experience. The development of Willow Run Airport and the I-94 Expressway in the 1940’s put Van Buren Township “on the map” and initiated a period of suburban growth over the last several decades. The Airport now offers businesses in the region a unique transportation resource for just-in-time manufacturing and corporate travel. Van Buren is home to international companies such as Visteon, Inc. and Ricardo, Co.; as well as homegrown businesses that provide a diverse and vibrant local economy. These businesses respect the community in which they operate and the environment that they influence. Grace Lake Corporate Center (formerly Visteon Village), located at I-275 and Ecorse Road, received LEEDs certification for environmentally conscious construction and Ricardo is a recognized world innovator in alternative energy and hybrid vehicle development.
The Township is intensely proud of Senior Services and has made significant investments in our award winning Parks and Recreation programs. The professional staff in the September Days center provide essential support to our expanding senior population and help them maintain active and healthy lifestyles. Van Buren has worked hard to build a parks system that includes five community and neighborhood parks as well as recreational facilities at Township Hall. Recreation programs engage youth of all ages and promote the goal of no child or adult left inside. In Van Buren, we are creating community through people parks and programs. Public Safety is a priority of Township government and with the support of the residents; we have been able to advance both police and fire services. The Public Safety Department is a known leader in the region and has been awarded for their efforts to proactively address potential threats. Fire services have been expanded to include duty crews that staff our fire stations on a regular basis. The Van Buren Township Board of Trustees prides itself on providing quality public services while keeping our property tax rates among the lowest in Southeast Michigan. As Supervisor, my highest priority is the well-being of our residents and a local government that is responsive to their needs. Whether you are looking for a place to call home or a location to grow your business, come visit us in Van Buren.
