Detroit Edison constructed Van Buren Park in 1947 for use as a campground by their employees and families. The park offered swimming, picnic areas, softball and numerous campsites. In 1973, Detroit Edison offered the park to the residents of Van Buren Township, along with Belleville Lake and French Landing Dam. Van Buren Township purchased 101 acres of Van Buren Park, 1,220 acres of Belleville Lake and 6 acres of French Landing Dam for one dollar. Although the park has changed over the years it still has maintained the secluded peaceful atmosphere that make it so popular for our families today. Basketballs and Volleyballs are available at the gatehouse for use on a first-come, first serve basis. ID is required for all equipment on loan from Van Buren Park.
Dates, times and general information are available for these events at the Parks and Recreation Department office or call (734) 699-8921.
Van Buren Park has many scenic attractions to offer. Enjoy viewing the fall colors while strolling down a nature trail or standing on the observation deck. Come to the park after a fresh snowfall to cross country ski.
Van Buren Township or City of Belleville residents may reserve a designated area in Van Buren Park for family reunions, parties, picnics, weddings, receptions and other special events. A Van Buren Township or City of Belleville resident must be responsible for the outing. That person must complete a Pavilion Reservation Contract.
